Los Angeles Westerners Fellowship, Autry National Center
The Los Angeles Westerners Fellowship is supported by the Los
Angeles Corral of Westerners, part of Westerners International,
a group whose mission is to encourage and promote interest and
research in the history of the American West. The Los Angeles Corral
was formed in 1946, two years after the Westerners movement started
in Chicago. Westerners International was organized in 1959
to promote communication and cooperation between Corrals. There
are currently 138 Corrals, including 12 in foreign countries. For

- Open to PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and independent
scholars focusing on the history of the American West.
- Topics relating to historical events or people and those that
separate fact from myth are of interest.
- Stipend is $2,500 for one-month residency.
- Fellows will be expected to be in residence weekdays.
- Fellows will speak about their research at the July 8, 2009
meeting of the Los Angeles Westerners. If not local, Fellows
should plan to be in residence at least two weeks prior to the
July 8, 2009 Westerners meeting.
- Fellows will submit a brief written report on research completed
to the Autry Institute within two weeks of departure.
- Applicants should describe their research project and clearly
indicate the relevance of the collections of the Braun Research
Library, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, the Autry
Library, and/or the Museum of the American West to their proposed
research. You may search the library and museum collections online

The application deadline is January 16, 2009. Announcement of
the award will be no later than February 17, 2009. Applications
should include:
- Cover letter indicating mailing address, e-mail address, daytime
phone, title of proposal, and preferred dates of research
- Three-page, double-spaced project description
- One page CV
- Two letters of recommendation. Both letters should address
your presentation skills
